Conversion of Lake Drive North and East to a seasonal one-way NB/EB general purpose lane and bi-directional muti-use path from Varney Road to Metro Road, and a “sharrows” transition zone from Metro Road to Dalton Road.
- Lake Drive Improvements was borne out of the idea to improve active transportation access and usage along Lake Drive. The road exists as a narrow two-lane local road which provides access to many lakeside properties. Many users reported frequent near misses or confusion between drivers and pedestrians/cyclists which made them feel unsafe and unwelcome to use the road.
- The goal of this project is to provide a dedicated space along the road for pedestrian and cyclists to use while maintaining vehicle use, emergency access, and home access. This was accomplished by: adding flexible bollards along the centreline of the road to physically separate the on-road multi-use path from the existing eastbound vehicle lane, installing signage at intersections and midblock to inform and direct users of the MUP and the applicable rules (no westbound vehicle access, bi-directional MUP), and constructing emergency access points (one currently at Lagoon Drive/Metro Road) to mitigate response times due to large intersection gaps.
- This project aims to improve the community by allowing more user groups and modes to use the road and experience the many beaches and parks along Lake Drive and can help drive attraction to the area.
