The expansion and redevelopment of the Davis Drive Commuter Parking Lot in Newmarket, which almost doubled the number of parking spaces for commuters and added six more bus bays, was jointly undertaken by Metrolinx, the York Region Rapid Transit Corporation (YRRTC) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). The expansion of the MTO-owned lot into a joint-use facility provides an easy interconnection between GO and VIVA bus lines, and allows residents of Newmarket, East Gwillimbury and Georgina to more easily use the transit hub through carpooling, park-and-ride, and bicycle-commuting. Effective staging of the work maintained 75%-service throughout construction.

The improved design sought to increase the visibility of GO Transit in Newmarket and improve travel options for residents of Newmarket and Georgina by providing both parking for GO Bus customers and a convenient transit interface for customers transferring between GO Transit and YRT.

The work was staged in order to maintain a 75% service capacity of the existing lot at all times during construction. The project also included the widening of the Highway 404 S-W Ramp to accommodate south bound traffic from the facility and the intersection improvements at Davis Drive.

This project was to expand and improve the Carpool facility at Davis Drive and Highway 404 in Newmarket.

The final design included expanding the existing 117 space lot to 200 spaces, 2 commuter platforms with bus shelters, and integrating 6 bus bays, accommodating both York Region Transit and GO Transit buses.

Multi-agency collaboration between York Region Transit, GO Transit, MTO, York Region and the Town of Newmarket was essential to bring the design to a successful completion.

This project was initiated to expand and improve the carpool facility at Davis Drive and Highway 404 in Newmarket. The improved design increased the visibility of GO Transit in Newmarket and improved travel options for residents of Newmarket and Georgina by providing both parking for GO Transit customers and a convenient transit interface for customers transferring between GO Transit and YRT. The final design included expansion of the existing 117 space lot to 200 spaces, commuter platforms with bus shelters and six integrated bays, accommodating both YRT and GO Transit buses. The work was staged in order to maintain a 75% service capacity of the existing lot at all times during construction. The project also included the widening of the Highway 404 southwest ramp to accommodate south bound traffic from the facility and the intersection improvements at Davis Drive. Multi-agency collaboration between York Region Transit, GO Transit, MTO, York Region and the Town of Newmarket was essential to bringing the design to a successful completion. CFA has engineered numerous parking lot and bus loop projects including the Davis Drive Multi-modal Commuter Parking Lot for Metrolinx and the MTO. This project involved the reconstruction of the existing 120 space lot and expanding it by another 100 spaces plus six bus bays to accommodate both York Region Transit and GO Transit buses. The work had to be staged in order to maintain a 75% service capacity of the existing lot during at all times during construction. The project included the widening of the Highway 404 S-W ramp to accommodate south bound traffic from the facility and the intersection improvements at Davis Drive. This project involved multi-agency collaboration and working closely with York Region Transit, MTO, York Region and the Town of Newmarket.

The site required installation of a primary voltage line and the connection was agreed to with Newmarket. The connection point was at Harry Parker Parkway and Davis Drive, approximately 800 m away from the project site. The line was to be housed in a duct bank, which would be installed in an open-cut trench. It was determined during construction that, due to a steep embankment, the portion of the trench for the duct bank would require a wide footprint that would require closing of the eastbound lanes along Davis Drive. After evaluating alternative methods of construction and with input from the boring subcontractor, it was decided to complete the whole run by directional drilling. This approach removed the constraint of closing traffic along Davis Drive.
