The Region of Peel retained CFA to provide preliminary and detailed design, contract administration, site inspection, and commissioning services to extend the Albion-Vaughan Trunk Sewer from its current termination point just north of Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) tracks to the Nunnville Road cul-de-sac and install a new forcemain from the cul-de-sac to the Bolton Sanitary Pumping Station (BSPS) including modifications inside the pumping station. The scope also includes a new trunk sewer along Riverwood Terrace and decommissioning of the Harvestview Sewage Pumping Station (HSPS), with associated modifications to the sanitary sewer system.

The main purpose of the modifications to the sanitary sewer system was to accommodate future population growth by routing effluent from the BSPS, which is currently directed to the Coleraine trunk sewer, to the Albion-Vaughan trunk sewer via the new 660mm forcemain.

The Region would continue to operate the existing three forcemains at the BSPS which direct the effluent towards the Coleraine trunk sewer, as an emergency provision and to provide the flexibility to split the flows between the two systems as required. The modifications inside the pumping station included header pipe reconfiguration and replacement of valves with electric actuators. In the future, pumping station upgrades will be required to increase pumping station capacity, however, it was not a part of the scope of work of this project.

To minimize the amount of sewage being pumped, HSPS will be decommissioned, existing forcemain abandoned, and the effluent will be directed to the proposed trunk sewer. The proposed sewer trunk on Riverwood Terrace will be designed to the lowest possible invert so that the future extension of the Riverwood Trunk can capture as much of the gravity flows as possible from sub-catchment area which now flows to the BSPS.

Total new pipe length installed on this project was 4,220m comprising 2,760m of 600-900mm CPP trunk sewers by microtunneling, 1,020m of 660mm HDPE forcemain by a combination of HDD and open cut and 440m of local 250-375mm PVC sewers by open cut.

The existing 900 mm diameter trunk sewer along Albion-Vaughan Road between Mayfield Road/ Highway 50 and the CPR tracks was designed by CFA and constructed in 2015 (Phase 1). Under this project (Phase 2), it was extended further north to the Nunnville cul-de-sac which is the terminal point of the new forcemain. Phases 1 and 2 of the Albion-Vaughan Road trunk sanitary sewer will see the construction of a total of 3.6 km of 900 mm CPP trunk sanitary sewer by microtunneling including the crossing of an active rail line.

Background studies and investigations included topographic survey, SUE Level ā€œDā€-ā€œAā€, geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations (through an RFT), archaeological study, transient analysis and natural sciences report.

Approvals and permits included TRCA permit, Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility, municipal consent from Town of Caledon, Township of King and City of Vaughan.
