The expansion of the North Brampton Pumping Station and Reservoir in the South Peel Water System was only the latest phase of CFA’s more than three decades of work at the facility. In 1981, we completed the design of the reservoir, and in 1991, as the system required expansion, we designed the pumping station at the reservoir site. Two 27-megalitre-per-day pumps were installed, with the potential for two additional pumps. In 1997, after several years of needing to meet only Brampton’s water demand, the station was upgraded to provide water to a small pressure district in Caledon, as well. In 2001, as a result of accelerated development in the Brampton area, CFA was retained again to design the expansion of both the reservoir and the pumping station. The initial reservoir design expected a doubling of the facility’s original 22.7-megalitre capacity but greater-than-expected water demand necessitated expansion of the storage volume to 30 megalitres and the addition of four more pumps in the pumping station. These projects, and our work since 1967 at the Beckett-Sproule Pumping Station and Reservoir and the East Brampton Pumping Station and Reservoir, have made us an integral part of the evolution of the South Peel Water Sytem.

In 1981 Chisholm, Fleming and Associates completed the design of the North Brampton Reservoir on the South Peel Water System. The site is located at the corner of Heart Lake Road and Mayfield Road at the north end of Brampton. In 1991, as the South Peel System required expansion, Chisholm Fleming completed the design of the North Brampton Pumping Station at the reservoir site. At the time of the original station’s construction two 27 ML/d pumps were installed, with a provision for two additional pumps. Initially the intended use of the station was to service the needs of Brampton’s water demand, but in 1997 the station was upgraded to provide water to both Brampton (Zone 6) and a small pressure district in Caledon (Zone 7). As a result of aggressive development in the Brampton area, in 2001 Chisholm Fleming was retained to design the expansion of both the reservoir and the pumping station. At the time of the initial reservoir design it was expected that an additional 22.7 ML would be added to the existing 22.7 ML structure. Additional water requirements necessitated the expansion reservoir storage volume to be 30 ML. The pumping station expansion required the addition of 4 additional pumps, two for each of Zone 6 and Zone 7. Two additional pump locations were provided for any future pumping requirements. Currently the reservoir and pumping station expansions are nearly complete with full commissioning expected in January 2004.

In addition to the East Brampton Pumping Station and Reservoir, and the Beckett Sproule Pumping Station and Reservoir, the experience at North Brampton has given Chisholm, Fleming an excellent understanding of the South Peel Water System, and the needs of a large municipal water distribution system. Throughout the construction of all phases, Chisholm Fleming was responsible for complete contract admindistration and full time resident inspection.
